EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE AND EXERCISE ON SWEAT RATE AND SWEAT ELECTROLYTE LOSS IN NIGERIANS

Sweat rate and sweat electrolyte loss were studied in 32 male Nigerians. Each subject was studied thrice at room temperature (RT) of 270C+20C and a relative humidity (RH) of 70+5%; at 370C and RH 90+5%; and during exercise at
RT0C+20C and RH 70 %. Sweat was collected simultaneously from the forehead and forearm using the filter paper disc technique.

CARDIO-RESPIRATORY CHANGES IN NIGERIANS SWEATING UNDER HEAT AND EXERCISE CONDITIONS

Active vasodilatation of coetaneous blood vessels and increased sweating have been observed to be the two main adjustments to heat stress in man. And acclimatization to work in the heat is a rapid and drastic process as revealed in
the generalized decrease in heart rate, core temperature (Tcore), skin temperature (Tskin) and the rise in sweat rate at a given Tcore and Tskin.

CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM CONCENTRATIONS IN SWEAT OF NORMAL NIGERIAN MEN SWEATING UNDER HEAT AND EXERCISE CONDITIONS

Since calcium and magnesium are essential to the body’s needs, their input and output are generally balanced by their dietary intake and their loss through the excretory organs. This study investigated the concentrations of calcium and magnesium in the sweat excreted from normal Nigerian men sweating under raised temperature or during exercise heat and exercise conditions.

SHORT-TERM EFFECT OF EXERCISE ON INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE IN A NIGERIAN POPULATION

Faculty:
Life Sciences

One of the leading causes of blindness is glaucoma. In most cases symptoms are absent until relatively late in the disease. Raised intraocular pressure (lOP) may offer an early sign of chronic glaucoma, particularly among hypertensives. Numerous international studies have indicated that several physiological conditions can influence the lOP of subjects, Irrespective of their systemic blood pressure (SBP). In order to assess visual health status through physiological changes, the effect of exercise on lop was investigated in a Nigerian community.

LONG TIME EFFECT OF EXERCISE ON INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE IN A NIGERIAN POPULATION

Faculty:
Life Sciences

Numerous international studies have indicated that several physiological changes can influence the intraocular pressure (IOP) of subjects. In order to assess visual health status through physiological changes, the effects of rest and exercise on IOP were investigated in a Nigeria community. The research involved 24 healthy normotensive subjects who were made to serve as their own control.
