Biochemistry is a relatively young science which has made tremendous strides over the last 50 years. It has made enormous contributions to the growth of medical science,biology,agriculture and industry. At the University Of Benin,biochemistry is a multi-functional department.Administratively under the Faculty of Life Sciences,physically located in the Pharmacy Complex,it offers courses to Science,Dental and Pharmacy students.
The Department of Computer Science was established in 1998/99 session,During the 1983/84 acdemic session,under-graduate teaching in Computer Science was started.The essence of B.Sc degree is to produce enough qualified and competent Computer Scientist and Information Technologists for the country.
The Department began in September ,1975 as a sub-section of the Department of Economics and Business Studies, it became autonomous and full fledged in July 1977 as the Department of Economics and Statistics . Since 19768, when it produced its first set of Graduates. The Department has also successfully produced at least 34 Post-graduate Students including 5 at the Doctoral Level.
The Department aims at equipping the students with thorough knowledge of the English language and Literature in English. Such knowledge will enable the students , on graduating , to serve their country and humanity in general , as teachers of English and Literature in English , or administrators in the public services and corporations.
The Concept of the organic world has been constantly changing since life first appeared on the planet with the environment as the controlling influence.Changes in the condition on the earth have brought about the evolution and extinction of species. Among the organisms on earth, man has become increasingly hyper-active since the dawn of the technological era.This hyper-active nature of man has led to the widespread environmental deterioration,which may eventually lead to mass elimination of species.
The department existed as two separate departments, departments of Fine Arts and department of Applied Arts, under the defunct Faculty of Creative Arts before their merger in 1987 as the Department of Fine and Applied Arts. There are 7 units or areas of specialization, namely :

Oral diagnosis is a systematic observation and description of oral diseases in order to identify them. Diagnosis is based on favourable interview, examination and investigation of the patient's ailments. Adequate inquiry and thorough examination and investigation are therefore very important in oral diagnosis most especially when dealing with pain and soft tissue lesions.
The Department of Philosophy and Religious formally came into existence in October , 2006. Before this time, the University of Benin had offered the B.A. Degree in Philosophy ( from the 1995/96 session) and in Religious Studies ( 1997/98 session).
The programmes were then housed in the Department of History. With effect from the 2006/2007 session, the B.A .Religious Studies programme become s re-designated as B.A Religions.
Aims And Objectives The four-year B.Sc(Hons) Degree programme in Physics and Industrial Physics aims at imparting the fundamental principles of Physics to students,giving them a broad-based knowledge of related Science disciplines and exp[osing them to major advances in Physics and applications to industry and needs of the society.
The department aims at producing first-degree holders with a fundamental knowledge of plants and a little more. Accordingly the first year of the four-year degree programme is devoted to the basic sciences,mainly Plant Biology,Zoology and Chemistry or Physics.
In 1975 ,the Political Science Unit was housed by then all embracing Department of Social Science which comprised the four units of Political Science,Economics and Business Studies , Geography and Sociology. However, with the subsequent increase in its staff strength, the Department of Political Science and Public Administration was establishment in 1977 as one of the academic departments in the then Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
The course Programme for B.Sc(Tech) in the department has been designed to prepare students for industrial and postgraduate work in areas of Microbiology and Virology,Physics with Electronics,Geology and Mine Chemistry,Biochemistry etc.The Department offers part-time programmes for B.Sc(Tech) Degree.The undergraduate work is governed by the general University regulation.
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology which began in September 1972 as a sub-section of the Department of Social Studies, became an autonomous and full fledged department in July 1977. The Department today is not only running Undergraduate Programmes but also Postgraduate Programmes for the M.sc and Ph.D and for Undergraduate Diploma Programme in Social work.
