Pharmacy

Pharmacy programme started in 1970 as a Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology within the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the University of Benin. In December, 1975 it became a School in the College of Medical Sciences. The Senate of the University upgraded the School into a Faculty in October, 1981 but was reverted to the status of a School in October, 1988.

In October 1991, Faculty status was once again restored as a result of the Collegiate System whereby related disciplines in the University were grouped into Colleges on the directive of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

The Faculty thus became part of the College of Health Sciences, as the new College was
then called. In December 1993, the Collegiate System of the University was scrapped and the Faculty of Pharmacy became an independent Faculty.

Objectives

The philosophy of the Faculty is to prepare its graduates for responsible and useful lives as educated citizens worthy in character and knowledgeable in the practice of Pharmacy. To this end, the educational objectives of the Faculty are:

  • To offer the students the opportunity to study the pharmaceutical sciences in various departments
  • To conduct undergraduate teaching through sandwich programme which will provide a close relationship of extramoral and University experience. These courses will achieve a close relationship between University experience and industrial practice and will produce a more immediately useful entrant to pharmaceutical industry and to other pharmaceutical pursuits. Besides, such a programme possesses wider educational and social advantages without conflicting with the broader objectives of University education
  • To conduct research over a wide field and to contribute (through research, seminars and symposia) to the increase of knowledge and application of science to pharmaceutical advancement
  • To support a variety of post-graduate courses and continuing education programmes and
  • To render relevant services to the community, and to collaborate with other Schools of Pharmacy and Research Institutes, both in this country and abroad

to provide high level of manpower for efficient and effective pharmaceutical services, particularly in the communities.
