Ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors is our top priority.

Ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and visitors is our top priority. Under the dedicated leadership of Ag. Chief Security Officer, Mr. Anthony Eyaroyi, the Security Department has made remarkable progress in strengthening security measures, enhancing personnel capacity, and modernizing infrastructure.

At the University of Benin, we recognize that a safe campus is fundamental to academic excellence, innovation, and personal development. Our team is committed to implementing proactive security strategies, leveraging advanced technology, and fostering strategic partnerships to maintain a secure environment.

Through continuous training, recruitment, and collaboration with external security agencies, we have enhanced our ability to respond effectively to security challenges. Additionally, our investment in surveillance, improved lighting, and fire safety measures ensures that our campuses remain protected at all times.

The Security Department operates with professionalism, integrity, and diligence. Our Key Initiatives & Achievements

1. Staff Recruitment & Capacity Enhancement

Overcoming Manpower Shortages:

Faced with an aging workforce and previous shortfalls due to retirements, resignations, and internal transfers, our department submitted urgent recruitment requests. In response, 202 contract patrol guards were recruited---raising our total strength to 559 security personnel. This major expansion enhances our ability to effectively police the campuses and maintain a robust security presence.

2. Human Capital Development

Ongoing Training Programs:

Continuous professional development is at the heart of our strategy. Our personnel participate in diverse training programs, both local and external, to master modern security techniques and ethical conduct. A key training event, themed "Towards Effective Security Operations and Ethics," is scheduled for May 2024.

3. Strategic Partnerships with Private Security

Engagement with Solar Security Company:

To further fortify campus security, we have partnered with Solar Security Company. Their trained staff now monitor critical access points---specifically the Main, Ekosodin, and Anatomy gates---ensuring smoother traffic management and a heightened deterrence against unauthorized entry.

4. Enhanced Campus Lighting

Solar-Powered Illumination:

Recognizing the importance of well-lit environments, the administration installed solar-powered lights across key campus areas. This initiative not only improves safety by illuminating dark spots but also aligns with our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

5. Modernized Security Facilities

Renovation & Rehabilitation Projects:

Significant investments have been made to upgrade our physical infrastructure. Recent renovations include:

  • Security Headquarters: Modernized as a command center with state-of-the-art equipment.
  • CSO's Office & Specialized Units: Refurbished workspaces for the Chief Security Officer, Crime Officer, and Intelligence Officer.
  • Security Registry: Enhanced administrative capabilities with improved record-keeping and digital systems.
  • New Office Constructions: Built to meet the growing demands of our expanding security operations.

6. Collaboration with External Security Agencies

Robust Multi-Agency Partnerships:

We maintain close collaborations with key external bodies to reinforce our security measures:

  • Department of State Security (DSS)
  • State Investigation Department (SID)
  • Nigeria Police Force
  • Nigeria Army
  • Civil Defence Corps

These partnerships allow for effective intelligence sharing, coordinated crisis responses, and comprehensive investigative support.

7. Maintaining a Peaceful Campus Environment

Event & Crisis Management:

Our proactive approach ensures that major campus events---ranging from matriculation and convocation ceremonies to Students' Union elections and national examinations---are conducted in a safe, orderly manner. This creates a secure and conducive atmosphere for academic excellence.

8. Maintenance of Operational Vehicles

Ensuring Rapid Response:

Our fleet vehicles receive routine servicing, timely replacement of spare parts, and consistent roadworthiness checks. This commitment ensures that our security team can respond promptly to any incident on campus.

9. Uniforms & Communication Technology

Professional Appearance & Enhanced Coordination:

All security personnel are provided with standardized uniforms to promote a unified and professional image. Additionally, the department has acquired extra walkie-talkies to ensure real-time communication across all zones, significantly boosting our operational coordination.

10. Enforcement & Legal Processes

Arrests & Prosecution:

Empowered to act decisively, our team is authorized to apprehend individuals involved in security breaches. Working in close collaboration with law enforcement agencies and with robust support from our legal services unit, we ensure that offenders are swiftly brought to justice. Financial and logistical backing from the administration further streamlines court proceedings and prosecution efforts.

Our Commitment

Every initiative we undertake is aimed at fostering a secure, peaceful, and vibrant academic community. Our continuous efforts in capacity building, technological integration, and strategic partnerships reflect our dedication to excellence in campus security.
