Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie, SAN

Professor Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, was born on 5th April, 1969, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, to the Irowa-Omoregie Family of Benin City. He attended Agbado Model Primary School, Benin City, from 1974-1980, Edokpolo Grammar School, Benin City, from 1980 to 1985 and the University of Benin from 1987-1991 for his undergraduate studies where he bagged Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree with honours. Professor Omoregie attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island-Lagos, from 1991-1992, and qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor. He then proceeded for the National Youth Corps Scheme in Plateau State, serving his primary assignment with Akwanga Local Government Council (now part of Nasarawa State) as Legal Adviser. Upon completion of the service year (1992-1993), the budding legal scholar engaged in private legal practice and was subsequently recruited into the Faculty of Law, University of Benin, as an Assistant Lecturer in January 1998. Professor Edoba Omoregie bagged the Master of Laws (LLM) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Law from the same University in 1999 and 2010 respectively. He rose from Lecturer II, through to Lecturer I, Senior Lecturer, to Associate Professor and became a Professor on 1st October, 2015. Professor Omoregie has been many times Head, Department of Private and Property Law. He has served the University in other administrative capacities including: 1. Member, Central Entrance Examination Committee; 2. Member, Security Committee as elected representative of Senate and Congregation respectively; 3. Member, Staff School Management Committee; 4. Member, Enterprises Limited; 1 5. Member, Equipment Management Committee; 6. Member, Essential Services Committee; 7. Hall Warden (Hall 4), among many others. He was elected Secretary General of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIBEN Branch, in 2006. Highly cerebral and result-oriented, Professor Edoba Omoregie has served as external examiner and assessor to many universities, and has been on the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation/resources verification panels. On 8th December, 2021 Professor Edoba Omoregie was conferred with the prestigious statutory rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for his academic distinction in the legal profession. The learned silk and highly resourceful academic has over 150 publications to his credit and has travelled extensively for conferences and workshops. Until his appointment as the 11th Vice Chancellor, University of Benin, on 2nd December, 2024, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, was on national assignment with the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Abuja – the think-tank of Nigeria’s National Assembly as Director, Legislative Support Services. He is happily married to Professor Ehimwenma Sheena Omoregie. Their union is blessed with children.
